Friendly's Express Restaurant: (Note that because we had no idea of the size that our group would be, the interest in meals, and the $$ prepayment requirement, We did not make any prior arrangements with Friendly’s. Depending on the follow-up survey this will be something we will plan for the next trip. P.S.. We also found the current Express meal deal Special is cheaper than the discounted group rate.)

The Friendly's Express Restaurant in the Maryland Science Center is reserved for restaurant patrons only. The restaurant has no space for eating or storing bag lunches. You may place take-out orders in the restaurant. Limited seating is available.

IMAX THEATER / PLANETARIUM SHOWS:

(Note that because we had no idea of the size that our group would be, the interest in shows, and the $$ prepayment requirement, We did not make any prior arrangements with the Center for group attendance to the IMAX Theater nor Planetarium shows. Depending on the follow-up survey this will be something we will plan for the next trip.

P.S.. The Science Center does not offer a discounted group rate, only group showings.) You can purchase show tickets upon arrival at the center.

A Note for Pre-School Teachers:

Another difficulty in our planning a group showing for our group containing so many preschoolers, is the general rule of the Maryland Science Center discouraging preschoolers from attending these programs. They "..have found that the length and content of the shows and class programs are not suited for preschoolers. Experience has shown that 4-year-old, Pre-K students and under become frightened by simple events such as popping a balloon or lighting a match, and there is the potential for our show to have an unsettling effect on these very young audiences. "

Science Center employees called Public Programmers as well as some volunteers will station themselves around the building, to do interactive presentations on a one-to-one basis about many different aspects of science. Keep an eye out for these programmers and their "Curiosity Carts", because they move from place to place and keep doing different activities

PLOD THROUGH THE AMAZON IN NEW IMAX ADVENTURE

Plants reign supreme as medicine men search for modern-day cures to age-old maladies

BALTIMORE, MD (20 November 1998) -- In AMAZON, a spectacular new IMAX adventure showing at the Maryland Science Center Feb. 5-May 20, an American ethnobotanist joins forces with a tribal shaman to share the adventure of a lifetime -- one that ultimately could change the face of modern-day medicine.

Meet Mark Plotkin, a research associate at the Smithsonian Institution, and Julio Mamani, a Bolivian Callawaya shaman, the central characters in this five-story visual extravanganza that not only takes us on a scientific journey into the very midst of Mother Nature, but introduces us to the Zoe tribe indigenous to the area and lets us marvel at a hot and humid mecca crawling with life.

Set in the remote reaches of Amazonia, two modern-day medicine men from two vastly different worlds share a single dream: to tap into the medicinal qualities of native plants to conquer deadly disease and incurable illness.

For thousands of years, the native Indian tribes have believed their use of Amazon plant life heals everything from upset stomachs to diabetes. Today, the quest for scientific proof is underway.

"There may be a remedy for every ailment known to man right here," says Plotkin in the film. "Some argue that the treasure of the rain forest is in the plants, but the key to that treasure is the knowledge of the people."

For the past 15 years, Plotkin has traveled South and Central America to gain the trust of the native tribal shamans in an effort to study and learn more about the healing power of plants. A decade and a half might seem a luxurious span of time to most, but for this world-renowned ethnobotanist, the clock is rapidly ticking. With the native tribes -- and some plants themselves -- becoming extinct, priceless information is in danger of being lost forever. One out of every four plants on Earth can be found in the Amazon Basin; one-fourth of all prescription drugs used today were originally derived from plants; but still only five percent of the world’s plant species have been extensively studied for medicinal use.

AMAZON, playing at the Maryland Science Center Feb. 5- May 20, is a celebration of the wondrous life that characterizes the world’s greatest forest and will bestow upon filmgoers an appreciation for the gifts the river and its rain forest can give the world at large.

It is here in this tropic wonderland teeming with plant, marine and mammal life that you’ll come face to face with woolly monkeys, tarantulas and piranhas; it is here that Western medical science meets the magic and myth of Indian shamanism and it is here that the discoveries of today become the hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Plotkin, author of Tales of a Shaman’s Apprentice, will be the guest of honor at a private screening on Thursday, Jan.28 and will be available to answer questions from the media on both the filming of the IMAX adventure and colorful stories from his adventures in the Amazon.

Due to space limitations, NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR BEVERAGES are allowed in the restaurant or Science Center AT ANY TIME.
